BP Oil spill: Destroying the world

Through one of my Facebook contacts I got a link to some pictures of birds smothered in oil in the coastal regions of Louisiana. The pictures are so horrible that words cannot describe how awful they are.

The website article (you can find the link on the bottom of this blogpost) and the pictures illustrates horribly clear the effect of what is already labelled the worst oil disaster in the history of the United States. Seeing these images made me sick to my stomach.

I enjoy watching tv stations like National Geographic channel, Discovery channel and Animal planet. I love watching documentaries like Planet Earth and the Life series. It shows the beautiful secrets the planet that we live on has to offer. But more and more often I find myself watching these channels broadcast depressing stories about the demise of our planet. About mankind taking down rain-forrests and complete habitats of animals, driving many kinds of animals into extinction. About man-made disasters that are destroying our forrest and oceans and everything in between.

This oil spill is just another reality check on what we are doing to our planet. Our constant need to make our own lives as comfortable and high-tech as possible is destroying our entire planet. We approve these dangerous encounters into our oceans and justify these oil drillings by our need for living in luxury. Yet we are all horrified when disaster actually strikes.

You gotta wonder; why do we keep taking these risks if we do not want to suffer the consequences of what happens when things actually do go wrong? When are we, as a society, going to stand up and decide that this is not what we want anymore.

When are we going to stop these innocent creatures suffering for our wealth and greed?
